Overview
This seminar course offers an introduction to the methods, theory and practical applications of demography for health. Topics cover fertility, mortality, migration, family demography, economic demography, environmental and infectious disease demography, and more. The course is interactive with a mixture of theory, methods, and applied demography.
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Understand theories behind major demographic processes;
- Be able to calculate different demographic measures; and
- Understand the link between demography and health through a global lens
Course Details
- Understand seminal demographic theories related to population change, fertility, mortality, migration, aging, urbanization/urban demography, and family demography (marriage, divorce, etc.).
- Identify the key components of historic global demographic trends.
- Demonstrate the ability to apply the demographic methods learned in class, analyze and contextualize the output.
- Project demographic trends into the future using methods.
- Develop strategies for applying demographic methods to public health issues.
- Apply a population-level approach to public health research and practice.

Material is introduced with a weekly lecture and accompanying reading.

Grading is based on attendance, class participation, final paper, & oral presentation.
Only UCSF students (defined as individuals enrolled in UCSF degree or certificate programs) will receive academic credit for courses. Official transcripts are available to UCSF students only. A Certificate of Course Completion will be available upon request to individuals who are not UCSF students and who satisfactorily pass all course requirements.
