Overview
The UCSF Public Health and General Preventive Medicine Training Program is a two-year program, designed to prepare future public health physicians to gain proficiency in public health practice, epidemiology and disease control and response at the population level. The program aims to decrease racial and ethnic disparities in health care access and health indicators by training physicians in public health and general preventive medicine, focusing on federally qualified health center (FQHC) clients.
This program partners with several local organizations. Each resident is an important member of multidisciplinary teams at UCSF, their FQHC clinic and in local and state health departments. Team members include public health practitioners, clinicians, epidemiologists, behavioral scientists, statisticians and policy analysts. UCSF maintains strong relationships with the academic communities of UCSF-Main Campus, UC Berkeley (UCB), state agencies (e.g., California Department of Public Health) and neighboring local health departments.
Program Details
PM-1 | PGY-2: The program's first year is dedicated to applied public health experiences. Residents rotate with FQHCs, UCSF-affiliated research institutes, and population-based electives and do full-time health department rotations, which are requirements for board certification in public health and general preventive medicine.
PM-2 | PGY-3: Residents earn a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from the UC Berkeley School of Public Health. Students supplement their public health coursework during the semester with longitudinal health department rotations.
To be eligible to apply, you must have completed at least one full year in an ACGME-accredited clinical program with 10 months of direct patient care.
Applicants who have completed at least one full year of an ACGME-accredited clinical program with 10 months of direct patient care are eligible to enter the program at a PM-1 level, equivalent to a PGY-2, regarding salary and benefits.
Applicants who have completed a full ACGME-accredited program and an MPH are eligible to enter the PHGPM residency at the PGY-3 level. These residents may complete the program in one year and do not require additional MPH coursework during their training.

Health and life insurance plans are provided at no cost. Four weeks of annual paid vacations are provided. All residents are given 6 days of vacation over the winter holidays. Eight weeks of parental leave are provided.

Program funding and administration
The UCSF Program is funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration and administered by the UCSF Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Available support for the Trainee includes tuition for the MPH program, administrative support, computer technical support, data entry and management support and statistical support. Financial support for additional training or travel to scientific conferences may also be available.
